Antique Elgin Convertible Pocket Watch, circa 1886

A classic Illinois-made 1886 Elgin \"convertible\" 18 size pocket watch, which allows the stem to be moved by a watchmaker to either 12 or 3 o\'clock position. This clever design means the watch can be fitted to either the open face or closed hunter cases. Fire-gilt 15 Jewel movement of excellent quality and remarkably preserved condition. Beautiful near perfect hand-painted porcelain dial and original hands. Nickel silver case. Sturdy, tasteful and functional. Would make a fabulous little desk clock when perched on a small easel or hanging from a hook. 

The Elgin Watch Company made watches in Elgin, Illinois from 1864 to 1968. The Observatory of Elgin National Watch Company was the only watch company in the world that maintained its own observatory to time it\'s watches by the accuracy of the stars.
