Description

It\'s not always man versus machine. For In Between, Helsinki-born Sami Kallio combines classic wood craftsmanship along with veneer compression molding for a sturdy but surprisingly lightweight stool. The traditional technique that uses a lathe to shape wood—known as woodturning—is part of the fabrication of the slender, solid oak legs, which are positioned at a slight angle. Produced by Copenhagen-based &Tradition in either bar or counter height, the designer says versatility was key. \"I wanted the stool to fit comfortably into any setting—just like the person sitting.\"If the semicircular rail brings to mind that 1949 Danish icon the Wishbone Chair (a.k.a. the Y Chair), Sam freely admits his regard for designer master Hans Wegner. Yet Sam also pushes his In Between forward with a more graphic, modular and lighter form. In Between is part of the \"Between Gaps\" series by this award-winning designer, who is now based in in Gothenburg, Sweden.
